Does Your Vehicle Pass the Roof Crush Test? | DC Metro Area Personal Injury Law Blog

Automobile safety groups recently revealed the innovative Jordan Rollover System (JRS), a superior test device for analyzing the strength of a vehicle’s roof as well as the automobile’s rollover crash protection.  The system tests vehicles under “real-world conditions”.  Unfortunately, the automobile industry doesn’t want you to see the test results and they balk at federal requirements for stronger vehicle roofs.

Although rollovers account for only 4% of all crashes, they represent 35% of all vehicle occupant fatalities.  As a result, poor roof structures kill nearly 11,000 people and seriously injure 16,000 others per year.  To address the need for stronger roof structures, the JRS was designed by a renowned California-based test device maker, Acen Jordan, and Donald Freedman, an engineer.  In the test, the automobile is mounted on an axis that permits it to roll.  “A portion of roadway is run underneath the vehicle as it is rotated and dropped so that its roof strikes the road as it would in a rollover.  The vehicle is then caught so that it will sustain no further damage.”  Such superior and dynamic testing allows consumers to recognize which vehicles are safer than others in rollovers.  Consumers deserve this information, and the federal government should require it.
