Profits for Insurers Sky-Rocket | DC Metro Area Medical Malpractice Law Blog

Despite what insurance companies want you to believe, there is no medical malpractice insurance crisis in this country. In fact, studies have proven that medical malpractice lawsuits have decreased throughout the country. So why are the doctors’ insurance premiums so high? Greed.

According to a recent New York Times article, insurance industry experts agree that carriers are expected to profit more than $60 billion for 2006 alone. As the Times report makes clear, the “record profit this year will add momentum to a decades-long earning streak . . . .” While the insurance industry has reaped incredible profits, consumers have suffered. The Director of Insurance at the Consumer Federal of America, J. Robert Hunter, perhaps said it best: “It’s unfair . . . they have overestimated their losses and vastly overpriced. And now, when the money rolls in, there is no relief for consumers.” The fact of the matter is that insurance companies are trying to strip consumers, including victims of wrongdoing, of their legal rights so that their profits can be padded at the expense of all Americans.
