USDA Issues Warning to Stay Food Safe on Independence Day

5 stars

The United States Department of Agriculture reminds Americans every year of the importance of food safety during Independence Day Weekend. Although celebrations across America will be different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, abiding by food safety suggestions is as important as ever.

The USDA recognizes that there is an increase in foodborne illness during the summer due to warmer temperatures and extended time spent outside. In addition, this year in particular could have many first-time cooks who may not know important food safety practices.

The USDA provided the following food safety tips in their recent press release:

  • Avoid cross-contamination between raw meat and other foods
  • Use a food thermometer to ensure minimum internal temperatures are reached
  • Keep foods at a safe temperature before cooking

In addition, it is important to refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible. Bacteria grows rapidly if food is left out too long and consuming it could result in several unpleasant illnesses.

Taking these necessary precautions is important to reducing the risks of foodborne illness. The full USDA press release can be viewed here. For more information about food safety on in the summer, check our previous blogs on the issue.
