Breaking news stories of a tragic commuter train accident this morning in New Jersey are currently headlining the news. Apparently, the crowded train crashed into a platform inside the Hoboken terminal, killing at least one person and injuring as many as 100 commuters, several of them seriously. Rescue personnel believe that all victims from inside the station have been removed.

Other local commuter services were immediately cancelled in the area and the National Safety Transportation Board (NTSB) indicated that an investigative team is being sent. Obviously, an accident of this magnitude will be investigated carefully by numerous safety organizations to determine what caused the train to not slow down as it entered the station. The investigation will focus on multiple possible contributing factors, including condition of the driver, possible equipment failure on the train, and track conditions as well as examination of the event recorder data (the train's black box). Since the investigation is in its preliminary stages, any speculation as to the cause(s) would be pure speculation.
